A family-owned business since 1860<\/span>
<\/strong><\/strong>F.Ad. M\u00fcller S\u00f6hne is a sixth-generation family-owned business<\/strong> specializing in the manufacture and customization of glass ocular prostheses<\/strong>. Founded in 1860 in Lauscha, Thuringia, our history began in Wiesbaden in 1872. It was the renowned ophthalmologist Professor Dr. Alexander Pagenstecher who brought us to the city. As the founder of the Wiesbaden Eye Hospital and a pioneer of modern surgical methods, he sought the best possible care for his patients\u2014and found in us the right partner to bring medicine and the craft of ocular prosthetics together. <\/p>\n

Experience That Ensures Quality<\/span>
<\/strong>Our ocular prostheses are custom-fitted<\/strong>, either at our institute in Wiesbaden<\/strong> or on-site in one of the cities that our ocularists visit regularly. Office hours<\/strong> are published each year in the travel schedule<\/a> <\/u>and are available only by prior appointment<\/strong>. The fitting is not a surgical procedure<\/strong>: During a visit lasting about two hours<\/strong>, our specialists craft an artificial eye<\/strong> that looks as much like the natural eye as possible. <\/p>\n

Traditional Craftsmanship<\/span>
<\/strong>As early as 1910, the sons of our company\u2019s founder described techniques in the book *Das k\u00fcnstliche Auge*<\/em> that remain the foundation of our work to this day. The glass materials used to make our prostheses continue to come from Lauscha<\/strong>, the birthplace of our glass production. <\/p>\n

<\/strong>Our specialists (ocularists)<\/strong> visit over 50 cities in 7 European countries<\/strong> to fit ocular prostheses on-site<\/strong>. This allows us to ensure that every patient receives personalized and professional care<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Ocularist \u2013 The Specialist in Prosthetic Eyes<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Education<\/strong><\/span>
At F.Ad. M\u00fcller & Sons in Wiesbaden <\/strong> Ocularists<\/strong> are trained in-house. The training program lasts six years<\/strong> and provides comprehensive knowledge of medical fundamentals, the craftsmanship involved in making glass eyes<\/strong>, and the custom fitting of ocular prostheses<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The training program is divided into two phases: After the first three years<\/strong>, trainees are granted the status of assistant<\/strong> upon passing an exam. Over the next three years, they deepen their knowledge of iris design, form adaptation, materials science<\/strong>, and the fabrication of custom-fit prostheses<\/strong>. The program culminates in the ocularist examination<\/strong> administered by the German Ocularist Society (DOG)<\/strong>, which officially confers the title of ocularist<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Duties of an Ocularist
<\/strong><\/span>Ocularists are specialists in the fabrication, fitting, and care of glass ocular prostheses<\/strong>. They combine precise craftsmanship<\/strong> with medical expertise and artistic sensitivity<\/strong>. Each prosthesis is custom-designed so that its color, shape, and mobility<\/strong> are optimally matched to the remaining eye. <\/p>\n

Personal Qualifications
<\/strong><\/span>The profession of ocularist requires strong manual dexterity<\/strong>. At the same time, ocularists care for patients in sensitive situations<\/strong> and must act with great empathy and tact<\/strong>, as the loss of an eye is <\/strong>a life-changing experience <\/strong>for many people. <\/p>\n
