Why Early Treatment Is Important

There are various reasons why a child might need a prosthetic eye. These include accidents, tumors, or congenital abnormalities. These developmental disorders include:

  • Anophthalmus: A missing eye
  • Microphthalmia: An Eye That Is Too Small

In all these cases, your child needs compassionate care. The prosthesis fulfills three important functions:

  • Even Growth: The ocular prosthesis stimulates growth in the eye socket. As a result, your child’s head grows symmetrically.
  • Natural appearance: The prosthesis is precisely fitted. The face retains its natural appearance.

Tailored Just for Your Child

Every child is unique. That’s why we create a personalized treatment plan for each child. We’ll decide together, on a case-by-case basis, how often you need to come in for appointments.

  • Getting Started: At first, we’ll meet at shorter intervals. This way, we can make sure the prosthesis fits perfectly.
  • Building Trust: These regular visits help foster a close, trusting relationship between your child, you, and our team.
  • Stronger Together: We know how difficult this situation is for you as parents. Together, we’ll create a safe environment where visits here will soon become completely normal.

How often does a child need a new ocular prosthesis?

As your child grows, the eye socket also changes. That is why your child will need a new artificial eye at regular intervals during the first few years of life. Based on our experience, the following time frames apply:

    • Up to 2 years: Adjustment approximately every 1 to 4 months
    • Ages 2 and up: Adjustments approximately every 3 to 6 months
    • Ages 12 and up: Adjustments approximately every 9 months
    • Ages 16 and up: Adjustment approximately every 12 months
