The company

Our institute is a family business now in its sixth generation. It was founded in Lauscha/Thuringia in 1860 and moved to Wiesbaden in 1872 at the instigation of Professor Pagenstecher. The institute was instrumental in the development of artificial eyes to today’s global standard.

F.Ad. Müller Söhne specializes in the manufacture and fitting of glass ocular prostheses. The fitting of ocular prostheses takes place either at our institute in Wiesbaden or in one of the cities and hospitals we visit. The consultation times are published and sent out annually in our travel schedule.

The fitting of an ocular prosthesis is not a surgical procedure, but takes place during a two-hour visit with our specialists. With an ocular prosthesis, patients who have lost an eye through accident, illness or other means can receive an artificial eye that is very similar to the one they still have.

The company was involved in the development of glass ocular prostheses from an early stage. As early as 1910, the sons of the company founder described the technology in the book “The Artificial Eye”, which in principle is still valid today. The various glass materials that form the basis of our ocular prostheses are still produced at the same location in Lauscha where the company started its activities back then.

Our specialists – also known as ocularists – visit more than 60 different cities in 7 European countries to fit patients directly with ocular prostheses. We have fixed consultation hours in Germany and Sweden throughout the year. Appointments are required for all visits to our consultation hours.

Ocularist is an advanced training profession

F.Ad. Müller Söhne in Wiesbaden trains ocularists itself and the training lasts a total of six years. The German Ocular Society (DOG) www.dogb.de is responsible for the examinations.

After three years of ocularist training and passing the examination, you become an assistant. After a further three years, the ocularist exam is taken, after which you can call yourself an ocularist.
